The Kia Niro PHEV features a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine with a full parallel hybrid system, which has a total output of 180 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque. Power goes to the wheels through a smooth 6-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, and front-wheel drive comes standard.
The Niro’s 11.1 kWh battery offers 33 miles of all-electric driving, and once the battery is depleted, the engine takes over. On gas alone, it gets an impressive 53 mpg in the city and 54 mpg on the highway.
Upscale Interior
Inside, the Niro PHEV offers a roomy five-seater cabin with 41.5 inches of front legroom and 39.8 inches of rear legroom. The seats are a soft blend of SynTex and cloth, but you can find all-SynTex seats on the SX Touring trim. Standard comfort amenities include dual-zone auto climate control, rear AC vents, heated front seats, and a 10-way power driver’s seat with lumbar controls.
Heated rear seats and a heated steering wheel are both optional, and ventilated front seats are available on the SX Touring. Cargo space starts at 19.4 cubic feet, but you can get up to 54.6 cubic feet when you fold down the rear seats. The available smart power liftgate opens automatically, giving you hands-free access to the trunk.
Cutting-Edge Technology
Up front, you’ll find a 10.25-inch touchscreen display that serves as the infotainment interface. It’s equipped with features such as built-in navigation, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, and SiriusXM satellite radio. With standard natural voice recognition, you can control things like calls, music, messaging, and navigation using simple voice commands.
You’ll also get access to Kia Connect, which lets you remotely start the engine, lock or unlock the car, turn on the AC, and even access vehicle info. All models come with five USB charging ports and a wireless charger. The EX has a six-speaker stereo, which the SX Touring swaps for a more premium Harman Kardon sound system with eight speakers.
Advanced Driver-Assist Features
The Niro PHEV’s advanced driver-assist features help take some of the stress out of driving. Standard safety features include forward collision-avoidance assist, blind spot collision warning, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, lane departure warning, and lane-keeping assist. Parking aids such as rear cross-traffic alert and park distance warning are included as well.
