What is Brake Fluid?
Your braking system is hydraulic, which means it’s powered by the movement of fluids. More specifically, brake fluid. Brake fluid is made from glycol-ether, silicone, or mineral oils and it flows throughout the entire braking system. This process lubricates the moving parts, prevents corrosion, and even helps with the movement of the pedal. When your brake fluid levels are sufficient, you’ll enjoy smooth braking power on your Sumner commutes. But if your levels run low, your pedal might feel spongy and unresponsive.
What Color is Brake Fluid?
When brake fluid is brand new, it will be clear with a slightly yellow tint. Over time, it may pick up debris that changes its color and texture. If you can spot contaminants in your brake fluid or you notice that it has darkened, it’s a good idea to schedule a service appointment. You might need a fluid flush before you head back on the Puyallup roads.
How Do I Check My Brake Fluid?
- Grab your owner’s manual and pop the hood of your car.
- Look for the brake fluid reservoir on the driver’s side of the engine. Check your owner’s manual if you need help.
- Find the “minimum” and “maximum” lines on the outside of the reservoir.
- If your brake fluid levels are in between the two lines, you are good to go.
- If your brake fluid levels are below the “minimum” line, refill your reservoir to the “maximum” level. Be sure not to overfill!
