Do Electric Cars Use Oil?

2022 Kia EV6 Powering Electronics

When you purchase an electric Kia like the EV6 or the Niro EV, you can expect different maintenances issues than you would with a gas-powered vehicle. Although, do electric cars need oil? Unlike hybrid automobiles, fully electric vehicles don’t have a conventional combustion engine that works with an electric motor to power the vehicle. As a result, you don’t have to worry about electric car oil changes.

While Federal Way EV drivers don’t have to schedule electric car oil changes, there are other services they’ll need to bring their vehicles in for. Keep reading with the service team at Sunset Kia of Auburn as we cover the ins and out of EV maintenance.

Do Electric Cars Need Oil or Lubricants?

As we mentioned previously, electric cars don’t use oil, but they do have a gearbox and an electric motor that require lubrication. Fortunately, that lubrication is designed to last as long as the battery, so you don’t have to worry about frequently scheduling EV maintenance around the Sumner area. Although, experts do recommend that you schedule an EV check-up at least once a year; if you drive more than 14,000 miles, you should schedule a service appointment at least twice a year.

What Services do Electric Vehicles Need?

You know that electric car oil changes aren’t necessary, but what services does your EV need to continue operating at its peak? Since not all EV manufacturers are the same, you should check your owner’s manual for the model’s recommended maintenance schedule. In the meantime, here’s a loose guideline that you can follow:

  • 7,500 miles: Check fluids and inspect the systems. Rotate tires.
  • 15,000 miles: Replace wiper blades.
  • 36,000 miles: Replace cabin air filter.
  • 75,000 miles: Replace hood gas struts.
  • Every 5 years: Fill vehicle fluids and replace brake fluid.
  • Every 7 years: Change air conditioning desiccant.

It’s also a good idea to check out your EV battery warranty as well. Some companies offer 8-10 years limited-mile warranties, but it’s best to have any issues addressed beforehand, as EV batteries can be costly.
