Many Puyallup drivers are curious to know, “What do tire numbers mean?” At Sunset Kia of Auburn, we think it is an excellent question and one that all drivers should know the answer to. We’ll cover the tire number meaning and explain the codes. Read on to learn more, and contact us if you have any questions!
When you look at a tire and see a code with a series of letters and numbers, they indicate the size, load index, speed rating, and tire type. You will want to know the numbers on your tire for when you need a tire replacement. Our parts department can assist you with ordering the correct tires for your make and model.
At first glance, the tire number looks awkward, but each section of the tire has a meaning, and it is code for the identification of the tire. Here is an example of a tire number:
Tire Number:
P215/65R15 95H
Tire Number Meaning:
Here is a breakdown of the letters and numbers and what they stand for:
P: Stands for “P-Metric Tire” – used for passenger vehicles
215: Stands for the width of the tire in millimeters
65: Stands for the aspect ratio (ratio of the height to width)
R: Stands for radial tire (the tire’s construction)
15: Stands for the wheel size
95: Stands for the tire’s load index
H: Stands for the speed rating of a tire
If a tire’s number does not have a letter before the code, it is a European tire or a Euro-Metric tire; each has different load dimensions. The aspect ratio comes after the forward-slash within the tire number. The bigger the aspect ratio, the bigger the sidewalls.
