Parallel Hybrid vs. Series Hybrid Vehicles

Whether you’re looking into a new Kia Niro or a Kia Sorento Hybrid, hybrid vehicles are an excellent choice for improving your fuel economy and reducing your carbon footprint. But just what exactly is a hybrid car? How do hybrid cars work? Are they similar to a gas-powered vehicle or vastly different?

Hybrid vehicles typically work by combining the forces of a gas-powered engine and a battery-powered electric motor. In hybrid car systems, these two power plants work together to propel you down the road efficiently. Here’s an example of the two main kinds of hybrid systems, parallel and series:

Parallel Hybrid

Most hybrids you’ll see on the market today are parallel hybrids. This name comes from the fact that both the gas engine and electric motor are connected to the transmission – whether it be automatic or manual.

Series Hybrid

Series hybridsare a little different and less common than parallel hybrids. They operate with only the electric motor connected to the transmission – and the gas engine is primarily used to power the electric motor and recharge the battery.
